Good evening!
It's hard to believe that we had our "end of term" party today! Where did the time go? The time has gone so fast. Thank you for a wonderful quarter. I know that I have had a blast teaching you. Every day brings something new-- new English (grammar, vocabulary, etc.), but also new memories. We have had so many good laughs as we have worked on this crazy language, English!
Today's class began with "think outside the box/law". I decided to use it because I thought it was a good review of an idiom we used earlier this quarter. I also mentioned the slang was going to use "a steal", but couldn't find an appropriate cartoon. I have a shirt that was a steal. It was only 37 cents at JCPenney.
Then, we did a quick preposition review and I passed out the reference sheet on articles. Please check out the link from my web page. It is much more clear than what I typed up.
After that, we had 2 more presentations. The MLK Elementary school presentation was a good reminder of how important reading is. The book that Jane explained is a perfect example of teaching reading/spelling through phonics. If you go to any festival at Esther Short Park in Dowtown Vancouver this summer/fall, you may run into the One of a Kind Drumline. They play around the area. They are an exciting and energetic group of kids to watch! The presentation on the writing classes (DVED 094 & ENGL 097) gave you an idea of what comes next. This year, I've had students leave my class and move into DVED 094, ENGL 098, and ENL 101. It really depends on the individual student. If you are studying next quarter, you might want to consider observing a class in a different program. It's the perfect chance to see for yourselves what the next step is. For myself, it is better for me to know exactly what would be expected because my imagination can make up all sorts of crazy things--and none of them may ever come true. I can easily set up such an observation (even next year when I'm at the other campus
